Baptisms
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38
When you become a born again Christian and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior one thing that Jesus asks of you is that you be baptized. When someone gets baptized they are making a decision to "get right with God". Baptism is part of the outward sign of accepting Jesus as your Savior. There are a few questions that are commonly asked about baptism like:

Can you get to Heaven by being baptized?
What is baptism?
When should someone be baptized?
Why should someone be baptized?
Let's answer these questions.
Can you get to Heaven by being baptized?
You get to Heaven by being saved. You are saved by believing that Jesus is the Son of God and accepting Him in your heart as your Lord and Savior. Just being baptized does not mean you are going to Heaven, however, Salvation and Baptism are always tied together.
When should someone be baptized?
If you are old enough to understand how to be saved and can understand separation from God because of sin then acceptance of Jesus is possible and you can be baptized. Infants and small children should not be baptized because they are not old enough to have this understanding, which is also why we have Baby Dedications.
Why should someone be baptized?
Baptism is something that Jesus asks of His followers to participate in. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19) You should be baptized as an act of renewal and obedience.

What is baptism?
Baptism is something that Christians do to show that God has given them new life. Jesus gives new life to all who believe in Him which Jesus referred to as being "born again". When you are born again there is a "death" to the former self and a new resurrected life that follows. When you are baptized you are submerged under water, this represents the death and burial of your old life and sins. When you emerge from the water it represents the new life that God has given you. In other words, Baptism is a physical representation of the work God does within your heart spiritually when you place your faith in Him. Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4
The only things you need to be baptized are that you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and that you understand what baptism is.
